New Yorkers are trying to raise awareness about water safety while remembering those who drowned this summer near city beaches.
A memorial service was held at Rockaway Beach Friday in memory of the seven New Yorkers who drowned.
That was the highest number of drowning deaths in the city in five years, according to officials.
The rise in drownings coincides with a decline in the number of city lifeguards.
An analysis by the City Council found nearly three million New Yorkers live in districts without public pools or access to water safety education.

Legislation introduced in the City Council would extend beach and pool season by several weeks, and extend lifeguard hours during the summer.
The city has taken measures to increase the number of lifeguards, which have dipped since the pandemic.
